I really enjoyed this book and read it in 2 days, its a real page turner and I couldn't wait to get to the end of the plot!Joe Dylan as always is a wonderfully flawed character and this book did not disappoint. Setting it in two very different parts of the world was a real plus for me.

Joe Dylan's at it again, this time down the mean streets of both Fun City, Southeast Asia, and the equally rotten lanes of the UK. There's a touch of Dickens in this, joining Newman's more obvious influences William S. Burroughs, Charles Bukowski and Jim Thompson. It's dark stuff, but exciting to read, and funny at times. A couple of nicely-drawn female characters compliment the hard loving, hard drinking, drug-addled, fight-prone men. A nice mix. Also a nice mix are the shocking surprises mixed within the familiar genre. If you enjoyed the other Joe Dylan books, you'll like this one. If you haven't read the others, you can't go wrong starting with this one.
Another fine effort by Author James Newman. The Joe Dylan Series, which began with such promise, continues to improve in this 4th installment. I liked that Newman stretched the canvas as Dylan returns to his original stomping grounds in England. Yet there is still included are the dark themes which emanate from Sin City (Pattaya). An intricate plot is key to a Joe Dylan mystery and The Black Rose does not disappoint in that regard. An absolute must for your tablet if you are a fan of the modern Noir genre. Highly recommended.
If James every has this book optioned as a film, then I'd be suggesting Guy Ritchie as director.
In many ways this is almost two books; there are the usual Dylan misadventures in Thailand, Newman's comfort zone, then the Ritchie-esque narrative as we delve into the murky world of British gypsies, drug deals and shady characters.
Duality in books can be a hit or miss affair but it is to Newman's credit that this one hits...often with as much force as a Brad Pitt punch in Snatch (but sans the occasional dodgy cockney accent)
Newman has his own peculiar writing style which stands out in a field of occasional blandness and is perfectly suited to the uber-complex and occasionally broken Joe Dylan as lead character. Dylan is one of those characters that, initially, it is hard to feel any empathy for. Which puts the onus on the author to work that bit harder to elicit said empathy. And work hard he does because over the 3 previous books to this you find yourself rooting for Dylan no matter his many faults.
There are some nice twists and turns and a suitably satisfying amount of bloodshed to jump this book from reading material level to page turner.
If you haven't met Joe Dylan yet, maybe it's time you did. Just make sure it's in a public place, in daytime, and with lots of witnesses
